What to Expect when you are 25 Weeks Pregnant

Congratulations on yet another week,  25 is nothing to scoff at! By this time you are likely getting used to many of the down sides to pregnancy and hopefully able to relax and enjoy things before the size of your belly really becomes difficult to manage.

Fetus Development at 25 Weeks

Your baby is coming along great and by this point is roughly 9 inches long (from head to butt).  Weighing in at one and a half lbs, your caring around a noticible weight (plus what you are caring yourself).  Although your baby is so small, if you were to deliver today, it would have a chance of survival.  Although this is not ideal, it just goes to show what stage you have already arrived at.

25 Weeks Belly and Weight Gain

At this point, from the side you are obviously showing.  Although you don’t look ready to pop, it should be evident that you are pregnant.  As always the growth of the belly is both due to the weight your body is putting on as part of the pregnancy as well as the size and positioning of the uterus.   Weight gain during this phase is part of the process, so don’t be alarmed as you see the dial on the scale move its way up.

It is important to remember that a healthy body fat is helpful not just for the baby but for your own health.  Although one need not be obese to carry a healthy baby, a bit of “baby fat” has its name for a reason (not just the baby puts on the weight).

Symptoms at 25 Weeks

STRESS During Pregnancy

If you were expecting to remain stress free during your full term, you may find it difficult to sustain every day.  Stress is HIGHLY common during pregnancy but it is important that you do everything you can to avoid the build up of stress so that it does not affect the over all health of the baby (and you!)

Focus on the here and now with the pregnancy.  Take a time to reflect on the process you are going through and be proud of yourself for pulling through.  Sitting back and realizing that you are building a baby with genetics and nutrients can really help you put things in perspective.

Another way you can help relieve stress is to communicate with your partner.  Let them know that you are stressed about the pregnancy and that there support and understanding can go a long way.  Believe it or not, your partner may be stressing out as well!  Knowing that they can be there for you can be a great source of relief both for you and for them.

Itching During Pregnancy

Are you itching?  Try not to scratch, but worry not, this is common.  Itching can occur at any point during the term, however during this 25th week it is more common.  This occurs in one out of five pregnancies.  Lotions can be helpful to offer relief, however don’t go overboard and as always check to see the ingredients.  Your skin will absorb chemicals so don’t put anything on your skin you wouldn’t put in your body!

Exercise and Nutrition

This week is like most others as far as exercise and nutrition go.  You should still be small enough that walking and possibly jogging is still possible (without discomfort) so continue your exercise as you have before.  Maintaining basic mobility is more important than “burning fat”.  This is about over all health, not about “looking good with your bump”.

Food wise stick to the basics.  Instead of avoiding fats, avoid processed foods.  That will help avoid bad fats and also keep you closer to a healthy diet.  Remember Fish can contain mercury so you want to continue to avoid that.

Partner Tip!

Be as helpful around the house as possible.  Offer to do the things you normally wouldn’t (maybe the dishes or cooking meals).  Don’t worry about the mother acknowledging your “helpfulness” but focus on taking some of the worry away from them.

Also communicate with your partner about any fears about upcoming parenting.  This can be a very daunting task looming overhead.  By discussing it with your partner, you can help reduce some of that stress that may be building up.
